RBAW Members Showed Up for 2024 RBAW Annual Meeting!

In November we had our largest annual meeting in history - over 80 engaged boaters showing up in person on a Saturday morning and more on the Zoom!  A huge RBAW thank you to those who attended and participated - including our awesome guest speakers, our partners at WA State Parks Boating Program, NW Mobile Pumpout and The Boat Geeks who streamed live.  And thank you to the beautiful Tacoma Yacht Club who took such great care of us.

Our agenda was packed - we talked about what we're focused on in 2025, and did a little humble brag on our 2024 success for recreaational boaters. We were honored to have WA Lands Commissioner elect Dave Upthegrove say a few words about his focus area's.

January 1, 2025 - New SRKW Law Takes Effect, 1000yard Setback for Recreational  Vessels

Beginning Jan 1, 2025, in Washington State waters, boats must not approach SRKW within 1,000 yards (1/2 nautical mile) and must stop movement if they end up within 400 yards of SRKW.

The new rules apply to all recreational boaters in Washington waters, including paddle craft like kayaks and paddleboards. While these new regulations only apply to the “resident” fish eating SRKW (not Bigg’s transient orcas), the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) encourages boaters to stay far away from all killer whales.

You can review the complete set of boating rules related to SRKW, Biggs or Transients and other whales in Washington State and British Columbia - to include the Canadia Sanctuary Zones - at www.BeWhaleWise.org.
